Education was a prickly topic amongst many crowds. Ranging from discussion on whether current methods bore good fruit, to controversial claims as to whether certain studies were educational, or mere political conditioning. The topic had more than enough potential to incite deep discussion and even minor riots and fights. People were very worried that their child would not get the opportunities they deserved, whilst others perhaps unconsciously worried about young upstarts replacing them in the future should they get the chance. What with all the debates and controversy that could spring up in the world at a moments notice...was it any wonder that the actual child would dread attending?

“You have it easy.” Alexander muttered to the small sprout growing out of the earthenware pot. Whilst perhaps not the greatest conversationalist, the young tree was more than willing to listen to the young boy as he tied back his dirty blond hair. He was careful to leave out a signature spurt of locks near the forehead unbound by the hairclasp, “When you become a full sapling you just get planted outside. You'll get to sit outside and enjoy the weather. Life gets easy for you. Pheh, but when we get around that age things get harder instead of easier. Sucks. It's bad enough I have to wake up earlier, but on top of it I've heard really bad things about Sapling level.”

Alexander was of course, talking about Sapling Level Education. It was commonplace in Katen after Earthroot General Studies, and all the children around the ages of thirteen and fourteen attended. Alexander was an exception to this. He'd been so terrified of Sapling from the start he'd done his best to fail Earthroot, with remarkable success. Of course, only the Branch knew this. For the honor of his family he'd been marked down as fourteen. After the hell he'd put up with making up work whilst other children had been enjoying free time, the stubborn boy had chosen not to repeat his previous attempt.

Alexander looked over his wardrobe for the day. To any child who'd paid attention in general studies, it was a simple matter to identify the material. Katen was said to be the meeting ground between mother nature and humanity. Their mutual dependance on each other meant Katen didn't often rely on trade for common items. Clothing was often made using the Lockbirches and Satin Spiders. Heavier material like vests and armor was harvested from the Rockwood trees and Hearthgrass. Of course there were other items, harvested from the rare and unique creatures of the forest, but of course they were more hostile, or intricate. Those interested in becoming crafters, seamstresses, tailors, carpenters, or jewelers could expect to learn more in Sapling. It was a facility designed for more personal education.

The uniform laid out was basic. Although Sapling did allow many variances, the fool boy hadn't been eager to enroll at all. They'd never gotten around to tailoring him for anything but the basics. Satin from the spiders was a unique item, and popular by outside cities and countries. It could cling to the body like cotton, resist tears like polythene, yet restricted the body little like silk. The long sleeved satin shirt clung to his body. Like his father, Alexander's structure made him a bit...broad. Due to his age and lack of muscle growth, his build still seemed off, but he'd grow into it. Katen wasn't interested in hiding details with their uniform. Healthy eating was expected, and it wasn't possible to last in the forest without plenty of movement. Most of its occupants kept either trim or in shape without much focus. Fortunately, the birchcloth pants were a bit heavier, and didn't cling as much. Naturally they closed around above the ankles through use of drawstring. Sandals or moccasins were optional, but most children only wore them in winter. The youth lastly placed a thick sleeveless vest made of hearthgrass over his shoulders, and tied a small stone planchet around a loop in his pants. It was his personal id so it was important to keep it on hand at all times.

“It's important I remember what I look like now...” Alexander grunted in the general direction of the plant; looking at his dressed form in front of a full body mirror, “...so that I can compare myself with whatever is left of me by the end of the day.”

“Oh come now Alexander, it won't be that bad.” the youth's mother was a prime example of a Katen woman borne of natures wind. Apprentice sooth-sayer for the village, she was trim and lithe like a willow tree. He soft voice and subtle movements were as soothing as rolling grass. Even given her silent and unexpected appearance Alexander merely shuddered, rather than visually jump in surprise.

“Guaah! M-mother! D-don't sneak up on me like that.” Alexander always tended to get a bit nervous around his mother. He'd never fully understood why, although his potential as wind mage like her had never been the best. It had never been fun to deliver news of poor grades in attunement, “W-why didn't you knock.”

“Oh...I'm sorry dear.” the woman's daintly fingures pinched the jacket Alex was wearing, “I was eager to see you in your uniform. I'm so proud that you made it into Sapling, Alexander. You're the spitting image of your father.”

“Eh? Ya think so?”

Eli Kertchov was a well respected Katen borne of the wind and fueled by the thunder. His ability with second attunement lightening, and birth attunement wind made him a sought out sailor by neighboring territories. His stern, but expeditious nature made him a strong contender as an intermediary between tribes, villages, and cities. There was no one Alexander looked up to more. Of course, seen very little connection between knowledge and a life of adventure. Perhaps his eagerness had attributed somewhat to his failure. But in the eyes of a youth, he had always imagined a different path to his success.

“But of course you do.” the womans laughter was as merry as the bells hanging from the ash wood eaves, “You're father always loved discovery. Not just on the seas or land, but through tomes and scrolls as well. I just know that you'll avidly take advantage of everything life has to offer you. When he returns, you'll be able to tell him about all that you've learned.”

“Y-yeah...your right! This won't be a problem at all!”

That second he'd said that everything became a blur. He vaguely recalled a muddled exchange, eating a filling breakfast, grabbing his satchel and then--

“Oh how in Mother's name did I end up here?!”

'Welcome to Sapling Level Education'

The massive polished stone stood adjacent to a row of thick oaks. The precise planting left only a small gap between them. Between this gap, and down a beaten path, sat the facility Alexander had dreaded seeing. Literally perched in the trees, stone steps led up to ten massive oak trees. Interweaving between there branches sat the large earthen complex. Though ominous to those reluctant, to scholars and eager students, the compound could be viewed in its true glorious light.

“Maaaaan, this is gonna suck.” but it was too late now. He couldn't just turn tail here, “Pheh, dad enjoys discovering knowledge eh?”

Flipping the satchel over his shoulder, Alex hunched down and stomped ahead.

“Pft, duped again.”

-`-`-`-`-`-`-`-

“Alright, then Cicely. Once more for review.” Lady Lylie's arms folded as she stiffly gazed over her horned glasses. The tall instructors body leaned backwards slightly to tower ominously over the short red headed girl.

“U-uhm, right.” Cicely seemed so fragile and vulnerable with the satin clothing covering her small frame. She was clearly unnerved by this 'review'. Nevertheless, the small girl cleared her throat and raised her head high before she began, “M-magic is the p-practice of conversion of raw energy, into energy of the users choosing. This metaphysical energy originates either from an interior or exterior force.

Energy drawn from an interior force is easier to convert, and poses little danger to the user. It can be shaped more finely, but lacks potency on its own. In retrospect, energy drawn from an exterior force is potent and strong, difficult to resist. However, it is difficult to control with finesse and the process of conversion poses risks to the user...”

The girl's large gray eyes look up hopefully at Lylie, searching for some sign of acknowledgment by her recital. But the almost crooked woman merely turned her head upwards a bit and pressed her to continue.

“Go on...”

“Oh...w-well then. Katen Folk have a unique endowment upon birth. One of Katen blood is said to be 'Born of an Element' and gain a natural affinity for this element. Mythology and theory vary as to how this came to be, but it's effect is very clear. A person of Katen descent is under no risk when using exterior force, especially when that force is converted into the nature they were 'Born' into. In addition, Katen Folk can convert this energy with greater control and potency.

Though this blessing is greatly appreciated by the community, it is also valued by the outside world. Seeking to maintain it's diplomatic immunity, and to have our lands viewed as sacred, outside lands are allowed the privilege of hiring key members of society. These members are those who either hold mastery over their 'Birth' endowment, or have also managed to unlock their 'Gift of Passing' or second element. They are henceforth known as Fey Children, and are privileged with serving as key persons of the community.”

The girl let out a sigh of relief, confident she'd made out alright.

“I-I think that's it.”

“Hmm...you still lack confidence, but the details were correct mostly.” Lylie pulled off her spectacles, pulling out a small blue cloth to clean them, “But remember Cicely, you are a rare occurrence. A child endowed with the blessings of all for Fathers. You have the potential to contribute greatly to this community. You cannot afford to slip up, even in the slightest.”

“Yes...Lylie.”

“Very well then. I will be off to my own students. Your teacher should be hear soon, along with your classmates.” the woman once again rested the spectacles on her nose. Grabbing a small tied bundle from the instructor's desk, the woman tucked the package under her arm and made her way out of the classroom.

“L-Lylie...” Cicely dug at the clay ground with the toe of her shoe, her face a bit flush, “I love you mama...wish me luck.”

The woman stopped dead in her tracks, and her eyes cleared briefly as though a fog had lifted. There was a silence between the two briefly, and then finally, Lylie spoke, “I...I love you too Cicely. Best of luck.”

Lady Lylie made her way out the door. Eventually, even the soft echo of her shoes fade, soon replaced by the bustling sound of students rushing to their classes. Cicely merely found her spot at the front of the room, sat, and stared blankly at the slate board in front of her.

Discovery Empty
PostSubject: Re: Discovery   Discovery EmptyWed 28 Dec - 18:02

There was something about the air on the first day of classes that Cedar reveled in, taking his time to savor the pockets of warm gusts and still spells as he maintained a purposefully casual pace en route to school. Unlike his first year in Sapling, the air wasn’t energized with the excitement of uncertainty and a fresh setting leaving his more adventurous tenancies wanting for more, but in its place was the comfort of familiarity, born of having a whole year under his belt already. He was a confident person anyway, outgoing and lacking any obvious securities. What was there to be insecure about, anyway? Only second year and he was already at the top of the social ladder.

Snuffing his ego before it had a chance to flare, Cedar lifted his eyes from the ground as he passed through the ring of trees around the school, catching sight of his usual group where they stood just off to the right of the stairs. They were chatting about something; taking long glances across the grounds to the other end and turning back to each other only to make quick comments and expressive nods, but it wasn’t until one of them noticed him and the whole group put a halt on whatever they were doing that Cedar understood.

His sister.

His twin sister.

Rolling his eyes, Cedar glanced over and found that, sure enough, Emi was standing with her own usual duo of friends, looking bored as usual. Like him, she stood out due to the lack of pigment in her pure white hair, marking a defect that both of them had been born with; the same one that was responsible for causing their eyes to take on a deep purple hue like the late evening sky. Thankfully the gene hadn’t extended to their skin at least, as their lightly-browned tans served to accentuate their physical builds, both of which were fairly impressive. Neither sibling flaunted it, though, even if there were few in the school unaware of the Deynas twins’ prowess. That was about where the similarities ended, though.

Emileah was something of a lone-wolf type, socializing with few and making friends with even less. She was no-nonsense, driven, and often ruthlessly blunt. Even her long hair, though beautifully wavy when let down, was always kept tied back, allowing only for a few strands to line her sharp featured face- and even the way she dressed was nothing if not practical. It was that dangerous allure that seemed to earn her so much attention from afar, though, but Emi herself didn’t seem to care much for such things, despite somehow still managing to be her brother’s social, academic, and athletic rival. Yes, even as children they had been like that: inseparable, yet constantly competing; best friends, but the greatest rivals. It was…

“Cedar!” One of his friends called, raising his arm as he did so as if giving him a beacon to follow. A friendly smile instinctively spread across Cedar’s lips as he shook off the thoughtful haze that must have been clouding his eyes, sending back a casual two fingered wave. Unlike his sister, Cedar was a personable sort with a borderline contradictory, self-proclaimed ‘casually eccentric’ personality. The way he dressed, even- tweaking the school uniform to his liking to maintain a classy look- somehow meshed quite smoothly with the more fun-loving faux hawk style of his hair, tying together nicely with his expressive grin. As he was, sleeves rolled up and shoes polished to a shine, the clashing images were on the verge of a new peak, but he was as carefree as ever.

“What’s up?” He asked the group rhetorically, using it more as a greeting than anything else. “Something interesting over there?” This question, though playful, was meant to be answered. Knowing this, the loudest of the group followed Cedar’s pointed finger to where their attention had been focused a moment before, a defensive reply forming in his mouth even before he had finished.

“Nothing.” The young man answered, a smirk on his face. “No one.”

He wasn’t fooling anyone, but they both chuckled as Cedar waggled his finger in mock threat, uttering an equally light-hearted ‘that’s right’.

Turning ‘round to take a look around the grounds, Cedar felt his arm brush against someone behind them, catching his satchel and pulling it off his back just as he was taking his first step on to the stairs. The look about him screamed fresh blood, his shoulders slouched and face filled with dread like a true first year, and yet he looked almost too old to fit the part.

“Sorry about that, bud.” Cedar spoke after giving the kid a once-over. Bending one knee he leaned down and lifted up the satchel, holding it out for the kid to take.

Well, there was no getting past it at this point. He might as well just try and get through the day. So long as he didn't attract too much attention from anyone he'd be fine...probably. What he failed to realize, however, is that blending in could quickly become problematic .

Having been held back a year, his odds of being recognized were easily doubled. Naturally there were some first years who knew his name, and others who just knew his face. But there were also the second years or the actual 'Saplings'; first years were typically known as seeds, with buds, blossoms, and blooms rounding out the five levels of education. Alexanders distaste of learning, though mutual to some, was not quite as deeply resented by other students. So meeting old faces might be a tad...awkward.

~Meh, I'll just keep to myself, and I'll be good.~

Narrowing his focus, Alexander hunched forward and started walking. He didn't get far of course, he hadn't exactly built up any kind of good karma to prevent misfortune. And of course, he'd built up plenty of the kind to get a perfectly good adverse reaction contrary to his goals. A soft nudge was all it took really as his satchel slipped off his shoulder and onto the ground.

"Eh?!" He nearly slipped right there. Understandably perhaps, after entering a mindset like that you almost come to view any passerby as a creature of danger. But he quickly cooled off, due to multiple reasons upon seeing the face of the one responsible.

"Wait...you seem...familiar."

~Oh Mother...~ not even a second after it left his mouth it register.

He didn't know him very well personally no, but if you could ever claim there was a root or source to a vine or tree, Cedar was a good example. Guy was pretty much well a born king of the masses, the adults just hadn't up and given him a crown just yet. He probably didn't recognize Alex personally, but his 'minions'...ehhh

~But wait...if Cedar is here, then that means.~

Sure enough, a quick panicked search of the area spotted another splotch of white locks in a mass of reds and browns. Emileah wasn't exactly a close friend. Then again she wasn't much of 'anyones' best friend. She'd always been the equivalent of a small beacon Alexander could stand near and get some semblance of protection from...people.

Didn't make her unpopular, though. No, quite the opposite. Emileah was more like the ever popular loner every one wanted to know. None of them really had the fortitude of self esteem to actually walk up mind you, but it never hurt her in Earthroot.

Of course the fool boy didn't realize that what he considered a beacon of hope was just a guarantee Cedar would recognize him...eventually.

"Uh...that's okay. Not a big deal, thanks." Alexander quickly snatched at the satchel, eager to turn around lest his face be more closely scrutinized.

The sun had set hours ago. Woodland creatures had bedded down for the night, and the deafening sound of crickets and frogs chirping resounded through the woods with doubled intensity. It wasn’t the added noise, but the night chill setting in that caused the leaves to stir. Or, rather, the shivering lump beneath the leaves. Leaves only shivered in the wind, and the night air was still as could be on this particular night—the last night of summer break, it so happened to be.

More rustling. Then something suspiciously humanoid rose from the forest floor, shedding early-fallen leaves and clumps of dirt. Sitting up, Fish Eivin Puck groggily raised a hand and scrubbed as much of the forest floor out of his dirt-brown hair and out of the pockets and creases of his clothing as he could. For a moment he simply sat there, gazing upward at the night’s first stars, winking down at him from behind the forest foliage. It was a wild part of the forest he’d camped in early that morning. Around thirty miles from Katen, give or take a few, it was well off the beaten path. Rarely did a traveler pass through, much less make camp below the ancient birch and sycamore under which Eivin now sat. It was also not a wood he was entirely familiar with, but that was all well and good. Less of a chance Loial would find him. He’d check the usual places first. As soon as he was concerned enough to do so, of course. By Eivin’s reckoning, he still had a week and a half before that happened. But, alas…

“Shit! Sapling!”

Jolting to his feet, Eivin scrambled to heap dirt over the dying embers of the fire he’d set before settling down to sleep earlier in the day. And without waiting to wipe all other signs of his visit, he took off at a dead run, empty canteen and machete banging against the side of his leg with every step. Sapling Level Education started in the morning, still at least six hours off at least. But that meant a night of traveling—at a dead run if he wanted time to make it back to Loial’s for his uniform first. Swearing under his breath, Eivin tried to recall the penalty for lack of a uniform. They eased up on the first day, didn’t they? But then, this wasn’t Eivin’s first day. At sixteen years of age, it was his third first day to be exact. Third first day as a first year Sapling seed… thing….“Screw it,” he muttered, rubbing at a stitch that had formed in his chest way too soon. He was neither exact nor motivated enough to make it back to Katen in time for his own uniform. He would get there when he got there. And if that was on time, he’d count it as good, slip into the back row, and fall asleep. Because he had a feeling that by the time he hiked into Katen… his legs would be killing him.

--

It wasn’t that he actually wanted to be back in Sapling. But Loial really only had three rules: stay out of the way, go to the first day of Sapling, and stay out of the way. He liked things… the way he liked him, and for some reason, he liked Eivin to attend Sapling on the first day of class. After that… Eivin could be half way to the Red Falls by nightfall and not plan to be back for a couple weeks, and Loial wouldn’t mind. Out of the way enough?

The sun had been up for about an hour now, and Eivin stood at the bottom of the steps, glancing up at their school house, built up in the branches of a circle of trees near the center of Katen. He liked traveling by night… less a chance of coming across a fellow traveler. And the cool night air kept the sweat from running as freely as it did when the sun beat down around midday. On the downside, his bare feet were half frozen. But feeling would return soon enough. For now… he had bigger concerns.

Striding up the steps two at a time, Eivin kept an eye out for someone—anyone he didn’t know. A little seed. Or for the first one to call him Fish. Because it would really feel good to pound someone deserving rather than a poor undeserving soul….

Nearly walking headlong into a boy as he stopped in the middle of the stairway, Eivin scowled, then stopped when he saw who he’d run into. Mr. Popular, Cedar Deynas. And he had a seedling with him how cuuuuute. What a bleeding stroke of luck.

“Hey, Cede, what’s up, nice summer? Remember me, we were first years together” he asked, speaking very fast as he clapped the boy—one year his younger—on the back. “Who’s your friend? New seedlet? What a coincidence, I’m a first year too!” Lifting the cord from which his machete hung from around his shoulder, Eivin handed it to Cedar with a quick “Hold this for a minute, would you?” before turning his attention on the small fry before it could slip off. “As for you, mind if I borrow your vest?” And without waiting for an answer, he began to tug the vest off the seedlet. “Forgot my uniform at home, see? Don’t worry, I’ll give it back after class.” Damn, it was so much easier to take a coat off of someone. Why didn’t vests have sleeves?

One more yank, and the vest slid backward off the little seed. Eivin was on the top step, slipping into the vest himself before the poor guy even had a chance to react. He paused just before entering the building to turn back to Cedar, pointing to the machete. “And don’t think of running off—I’ll want that back after class as well,” he called before disappearing entirely. A short sprint to homeroom, settled in the back row, and he’d be asleep before class began. What a successful start to the year.

Stumbling slightly as someone bumped him from behind, Cedar knew instantly who it was by the earthy smell of forest undergrowth, forcing him to fight back a sudden urge rising in him to brush off the back of his vest.

“Hey Cede, what’s up, nice Summer? Remember me, we were first years together.”

‘Cede’.

Turning ‘round, Cedar let the nickname slide, if only because ‘Eivin’ was the only one besides his sister who could get away with it. He wasn’t sure why, really, for he could probably take the school’s number one carefree delinquent in a one-on-one fight despite the age difference, but that was unlikely. After all, they were friends… of sorts. No, more like chummy acquaintances, really, as Cedar never saw enough of the guy to spend any sort of time with him.

“Fish, you’ve been in first year with just about everyone in this school.” He grumbled, somehow maintaining a jovial tune. It was funny because it was true.

Finding a machete in his hands before he could make the slightest protest, Cedar simply watched with raised brows as the vest from the nameless first year was pulled from his very person, fitting Eivin quite nicely. It was a once in a year opportunity to see such a sight, but not a moment later (and once again before a word could be put in edge-wise) the vest thief was gone, leaving Cedar with a weapon the length of his forearm and the first year without full attire.

Damnit, Fish.

Ignoring the murmurs behind him, he tucked the machete under his arm and motioned for the first year to come over, deciding that, if he had cleaned up all of Eivin’s previous first-day messes, there was no reason to stop now.

“Hey, you,” Cedar nodded towards the vest-less student. “Come with me. I’ve got to stash this-“ he motioned to the blade. “-and I’m pretty sure I have a spare vest from last year, too.”

One of those moments were logic and reason were thrown clear out the window. Just...one of those moments. It was also clearly, one of those days. Indeed, one moment Alexander's only worry was managing to somehow barricade himself within the small confines of the skeletal desks provided. Now his main problem was that his lack of education limited him from the knowledge of the maximum penalty for murder by a minor. Mayhaps it wouldn't have been that bad a first. Lord knows this Eivin seemed like the sort one just ignored until they went away. But there were two things preventing Alexander from this.

The first was the boy himself. His confrontational attitude had always gotten him into trouble in the past. The lad was either a courageous youth, a short tempered brat, or a stupid welp who didn't know what he was getting into. In his as of yet short years, he'd stood up to everything from bullies, to adults, to the sooth-sayer herself, and even a short tempered grass tenvil once. He'd come out of that last one with more than a few scratches. But this was at the bottom of the list of bad things to go up against. Small fry...on the scale of possible bad repercussions.

True conflict on the first day was...not a good thing to be sent home with. But damn it all that Eivin had no idea what he'd just stirred up.

"I'm gonna pound that overgrown drop out within an inch of his life." amusing choice of words, considering from whence they came.

“Hey, you, Come with me. I’ve got to stash this-“

Words. He'd noticed them. So he still had some fibre of sense holding him back.

“-and I’m pretty sure I have a spare vest from last year, too.”

"Pfeh, it's not that simple." Alexander glared after the school entrance, as if he could still see the culprit, "There's something on that vest. And it's important to me. I won't be happy till I can put his teeth in a jar to bury for the ivory birch."

A popular folk tale. Claiming that small gifts and onyx would be left behind for those who buried their teeth behind for the ivory birch. A popular counter tale amongst the youth was that burying the teeth of another would cause the ivory birch to leave coal behind to the owner of the teeth instead of gifts the next time they buried something.

"That crazy freak brought a weapon here. Why are you hiding it for him? Seems like a total pest. You should turn it in."

There were some people destined for greatness. Their form, their very fiber, forged from something tougher than the rest. The kind of thing that sat them into leadership before they even knew what a crown was, and put them on a pedestal above society without them ever even needing to try. It was a matter of social, or even unsocial evolution: the development of a stronger, faster breed, that drew worship from the simple fact that it existed. Tyrin Rothlestor had once written an entire paper about the subject. It had gotten a B.

Tyrin, was not one of these people. He was average; almost painfully so. His height was normal, his complexion dark, and his eyes a dull mud brown. His hair was no longer most his age, a non-striking black drawn back in a small tail in the back by a band at almost regulation length, and while he was just as fit as the next Katen citizen, his athletic prowess was neither bad, nor anything that would be written home about. He scored consistently average grades in his Sapling education, but he had to study for them like everyone else. And though he had his Birth attunement, the signs of any second talent, or even a real gift with his given one had not manifested itself in the least.

He was a Bud, now. His third year of education would start underway any moment, and Tyrin had very few ideas about this one being any different than the last, or the one before. No, he was not under any motivation to strive for greatness, when he could see it perfectly from where he stood. Greatness was standing between her two friends in the hallway, splitting a sea of milling students around a mane of beautiful white hair.

Emileah, was a Goddess. She thrived at the mental, the physical, the logistical, and the creative. She was a social Pillar: the world revolved around her, friends, enemies, admirers, and the jealous- ohhh, the jealous, without her so much as raising a hand to spur it on. She was the center of attention without meaning to be, the lead to follow though she never gave orders, and the person to know though she, in fact, had no need to know anyone. Sometimes, Tyrin doubted she even breathed: the air simply moved into her lungs and out again out of a sheer respect and adoration for her existence.

"Beautiful," Tyrin offered.

"Thanks! I know it isn't really the season for mittens, but Sir Wiggles was just working so hard that I couldn't let his work go to waste, you know?" The aforementioned mittens went on to completely fill Tyrin's vision, and the loss of Emileah allowed reality to rumble shakily back.

Lampard Priffinberry was just a Seed, and was hopping around like an excited bunny at the idea of his first day at the new school. Tyrin had heard the words "Friendship" and "Happiness" thirty-seven times since waking up, and all but one had had been from Lampard's exciting ramblings. The other was from a girl playing with dolls. So... that was interesting too.

Just over five feet, Lampard had a curly, poofy haircut that made his head resemble that of a sheep, and was a pale blond color like fresh buttermilk. His eyes were a cheery, chocolatey brown, and hadn't stopped looking at everyone who passed since this morning, and his skin was incredibly fair. Though both Tyrin and Lampard were both in regulation uniforms, Lampard had added a bright yellow flower to his, actually sewing it in, and it was preserved by something whipped up by either his mother, a renowned florist, or his father, who was considered an expert in fashion well beyond Katen's walls.

And of course, Lampard had his mittens. Which even now were having the finishing touches put on them by the reknowned and apparently knighted Satin Spider, Sir Wiggles. The spider was just a baby, and it scampered along Lampard's hand with a lithe ease, spinning it's silk like a pro while Lampard himself tried to keep him at least relatively hidden. Pets on school grounds, even if only used for fashion, were not generally encouraged- especially when they had a tendency to leap into people's hair and make nests like Sir Wiggles did. Tyrin wasn't even sure it was legal to keep a Satin Spider at all. But hewasn't about to take away Lampard's fun over something as irrelevant as legality.

"There are soooo many people here!" Lampard let out a little squeal, and leaned back on the wall. Tyrin, by himself, looked almost like a aspiring troublemaker, hanging out in a back corner of the stairs. But the giddy Lampard was ruining that image well before it could start to form. Looking at his mittens proudly, and holding them up again, Lampard let Sir Wiggles jump from one hand to the other in the air, and looked back up at Tyrin like a puppy wondering if his master had just seen his latest trick. Tyrin offered a small smile, but nothing else. His mind was still elsewhere. Somewhere, in a forest by a river, with Emileah.

"The third year of education, is called the Bud year," Tyrin mused, strumming his fingers on the wall. "I wonder, Lamb, if there is some symbolism to it. The Bud. It is the most powerful level of all, when you think about it. Brimming with so much potential. It is looked upon by all with expectation, watched for days, weeks, and months. It creates joy for ages, adds mystery and excitement to life. The Bud does not take up much space. It doesn't need to. But it accomplishes more for its purpose than any of the other stages combined, and it can do it on and on, forever. Not like a flower. A flower shines for but a moment, and then is past its purpose, simply sitting there like a dull lump and waiting to die."

Pondering, Tyrin looked down at his uniform, and at the institute of higher learning around him, and sighed. "I imagine I should like to be a Bud forever, in spirit. They are... Exquisitely productive."

Sir Wiggles did a small flip, and Lampard beamed. After a moment, the younger boy blinked, frowned, and then looked up at his companion- who was only higher because he was, in fact, standing one step above the Seed. His counterpoint, was profound.

"Yeah. But flowers are pretty." Lampard smiled broadly, the metaphors completely lost on him. "Nobody would put a Bud on their jacket."

"And it's the finest jacket in school, Lamb." Tyrin exhaled, patting Lampard on the shoulder. He wouldn't push the issue. Probably wouldn't get anywhere if he did anyway. "Off you go now. It's the first day of school: you have friends to make, remember?"

An excited fire burned in Lampard's eyes, the youth clenching his hands in determination- and almost crushing Sir Wiggles, who crawled out just in time to settle down on Lampard's wrist and chitter. "Yeah! Today's gonna be great!"

"Absolutely." Tyrin turned to look at Emileah again, but her brother and his idiot friends had already jostled themselves into the way, and her perfect visage was lost to him. Lampard started to skip- he was skipping, literally skipping, but stopped, and went back up to Tyrin.

"Uhhhh, hey, do you have any food?" Lampard winced. "I forgot my sugar cubes at home again, and we both know how wumbly Sir Wiggles tummy gets."

How a creature as small as that spider managed to put away so many pounds a day Tyrin would never know. It was certainly more than any in the silk farms took in. But he had come prepared, and offered Lampard a loaf of bread stuffed into his own lunch pouch without a word. Lampard giggled with delight, and was off again. Tyrin could swear he even heard the boy singing to himself as he hop, skip, and jumped his way down the halls.

"First day of school. First day of school. Something something something, and Sir Wiggles is so cool!"

...That spider was going to be confiscated before the day was out. If Tyrin had any other friends, he even would have been willing bet on it.

So, the kid had some bark in him- good. He would need a little more bite, though, if he intended to back up a threat like that, because Eivin certainly would. The first day wasn’t really the best place to start making enemies, however, and though Eivin had made the first ill move, he would be gone by tomorrow, making only guest appearances at the school when the mood struck him. Of course, he always made sure to make an… impression, when he was there, and tick off as many people as he could, though Cedar had yet to figure out how much of it was intentional. Regardless, Eivin was an ass, but he was a tough ass; a lot tougher than the new blood knew.

“As much as he would deserve that- and as much as I would like to see it- I don’t think it would be quite that simple.” Cedar replied casually. “You’ll get your vest back when he gets his machete back; don’t worry about it.”

Knowing Eivin, he would have the vest off the moment they were dismissed for the day, anyway, either discarding it like trash (they were fairly ugly, after all) or keeping it just to toy with the little sapling. If he wanted his rusty old blade back, though, he was going to have to cut his fun short.

Taking a step towards the doors, Cedar groaned when the first year rattled off more complaints, causing him to take a deep breath in before turning back, clearly not up for all his negativity despite delivering his reply with a wolfish half-smile that set a group of girls a few feet away into a mess of squeaky chatter.

“Why?” He chortled, playfulness on his face. “Why not?”

With a shrug and a loose wave of his hand he motioned for the kid to follow, carrying on without looking back.

"It would be perfectly simple!" Alex declared vehemently, "It's called kicking him in the loins and bloodying his nose. Then I pull my vest from his mangled remains and I...GET MY CHARM BACK!!"

...

...

Realization is an unpleasant thing at times. There is of course the ever present knowledge and embarrassment that the obvious fact was eluding you in the first place. This was often the first and last identifiable emotion attached to it. Of course doubt in confusion only aids the embarrassment, due of course to the fact you were stupid enough to let it slip from your memory. And of course realization that you'd just yelled out a graphic and rather unnerving display of your mental images usually rounds with a feeling that you are a terrible person...and more embarrassment.

"Gueeh..." All alone now. If Cedar hadn't decided to take the lead so Alexander could follow him before, he was definitely taking it now to avoid association. Alex was quick to book it after the boy, "O-o-or maybe I could use a s-spare for now!"

As horrible as the feeling is, it can at least give one moments of rationality. The though of disappointing his mother yet again, and perhaps his father in the process finally bore down with greater weight on the youth. Perhaps for now, it really was better to try and just survive the day.

"Why not? There is no reason why not. It's completely unimaginable in fact. As for reasons why you should. I'd imagine there are plenty of reasons to turn in a weapon belonging to a filthy overgrown ape who steals clothing and bullies others, wouldn't you?"

He would have gladly enjoyed hearing Cedar give Alexander a reason to protect a youth who had managed to make it on Alex's pure hatred list in under five minutes when he didn't even know his name. Unfortunately, a flash of yellow passed by, and something seemed to jump from what the boy could have sworn was a sheep. Not long after it jumped, Alexander saw eighteen eyes staring him in the face, along with a pair of corkscrewed fangs.

"wha-...SATIN SPIDER?!"

Although he intended to yell out this second half immediately, the spider quickly crawled under his shirt, causing him to go rigid. Satin Spiders had a unique venom that often induced a skin irritation not unlike poison oak(although on smaller creatures and prey it caused the skin to undergo a metamorphosis which the spiders used in their nests). Most children were taught to remain still if the things got close to skin. Of course, this venom doesn't manifest in the young. Only in the adults who have twenty eyes instead of eighteen, and hooked fangs. Something a boy like Alexander...definitely wouldn't know.

"Umm...Cedar...help?"

------

Cicely was arranging her books for the third time. She was nervous and scared. There hadn't been a day gone by in Earthroot where she wasn't called on at least twice a day by the teacher. Almost every person above the age of ten knew her name. And it wasn't in a way that implied popularity or love. More like bone crushing expectation. Maybe that explained her height.

~I can't believe I'm still shaky.~ the girl chastised herself, ~Geh, I'm not ready for anything if I haven't learned enough to shake off this nervousness. J-just like Emile said. I better learn some confidence this year or I'll really be in for it.~

Oh blessed opportunities. Or cruel coincidence, whichever. Like it as not, any dialogue carried out with the large and unshowered Eivin likely wasn't the type to instill confidence. But then, when you had to bury yourself in studies as Cicely did, you didn't pay much attention to the social hierarchy.

"Umm, heh, don't get too comfortable." the girl make a rather poor attempt to joke...or at least, use a hearty tone in her voice, "The teacher may assign you someplace else. Don't want to move in that desk too early now do you?"

Chair tipped back on two legs, the backrest balancing against the wall, and feet kicked up on his desk, Eivin sat in the back row with his eyes closed. It had taken him a while to get into this position, but now that he was comfortable, his plans for sleep could finally move forward. It wasn’t usually until around noon that Eivin drifted off to sleep, but after the long trek back to Katen, he was feeling that a long nap was more than just over-due. It was well deserved.

"Umm, heh, don't get too comfortable. The teacher may assign you someplace else. Don't want to move in that desk too early now do you?"

There was a tremor of uncertain laughter in the voice. It was a vaguely familiar voice, though it brought nothing but impressions of over-eagerness and academic excellence to his mind.

“No they won’t,” he answered without opening his eyes. Chances were he wouldn’t recognize her anyway. If he expected that to be the end of it, however, he was wrong. The sound of nervous, shallow breathing did not leave. Cracking one eye open, Eivin squinted up at the girl. Large gray eyes, watering with the effort it seemed to take her to stand there attempting conversation with him, were the first thing he noticed. The second thing he noticed was the slight tremor in her stance. She… wasn’t used to confrontation. And yet Eivin was almost certain he recognized her from Earthroot. How did she not know that he was the last person she wanted to bother? Wait, no… how did she not know that he wouldn’t stick around long enough to be assigned a permanent desk?

Leaning forward, Eivin allowed his chair to fall down onto all four legs as he surveyed the girl… still struggling with her name. Her Sapling Level Education books were clasped close in hand, as was… “It was nice of you to bring me lunch, though.” Reaching out, he yanked the brown paper sack from her hand and looked through it quickly, finding a sandwich and an apple. “You can go back to the front row now. Thanks.”

"...and Sir Wiggles is so cool! A book, and a bag, and a pouch of sewed up rags and..." Lampard frowned. Ohhh, why had he already used bag? What else was there to rhyme with rags now? Even if he wasn't looking for an audience, as a proud Priffinberry he was very much a perfectionist with his work. And that included jolly first day of school jingles! So now he'd have to start all over. From scratch. New opportunities! Half the fun was in the making!

Lampard took a deep breath, and smelled the fresh, hallway air. Inspiration was everywhere! The first day of school! big new place! Fun, adventures, friends, lunchtime! Lampard never knew how Tyrin remained so mellow on his first day. It was all about excitement! Big, new, stuff! Everywhere! Lampard smiled at the world, swaying back and forth as he hopped down the steps... but then he stopped. Serious time! He had to find his classroom. The super-fancy fun stuff education system wouldn't start until he had a desk!

"You know what my favorite thing is about the first day of school Sir Wiggles?" Lampard reached through his pack and pulled out his school map, drawn all the way back when his father was a Seed. "My favorite thing is.... Ummm... the part where it's the first day of school!"

When no chittering response or sensation of crawling followed, Lampard frowned, raising his gloves. "Sir Wiggles?"

'SATIN SPIDER?!'

The alarmed shout made Lampard turn around, just in time to see Sir Wiggles squirming his way into another boy's shirt. Weird. Normally he'd go for the hair. Wait, that wasn't important now! Lampard did an about-face as the boy made a horrified expression and asked his friend for help. Hmph! Well if the they didn't know what to do with a Satin Spider, they shouldn't have tried to take Sir Wiggles in the first place. It seemed obvious!

"Hey, gimme my Wiggles back!" Lampard grabbed the boy's arm and pushed up, trying to shake Sir Wiggles back out the bottom. Instead, the spider simply peaked it's head out of the boy's collar, made a little chittering noise that sounded almost like a giggle, and then darted back in. Ooooh! That spider was going to get a good, stern talking to for this! He could've at least waited til class started! Oh. Well, that didn't work either, but he certainly shouldn't have been goofing aroud now! With Sir Wiggles stuck in there like that, it didn't seem like there was any way to get him out-

Oh, but there was a machete. Taking it from under the friend's arm, Lampard carefully and quickly sliced up the front of the panicking boy's shirt, leaving it to fall in half, and a now exposed Sir Wiggles to scamper grudgingly onto the other Seed's shoulder and sit there, looking smugly at the group with eighteen different gleaming eyes. His pet free from any accidental suffocation or swatting, Lampard held the machete back out for the 'Cedar' boy to take it... and then blinked.

"Why do you have a machete at school!?" Lampard waggled it dissaprovingly at Cedar, the blade coming only inches away from the other youth. He struck his hand out at the rest of the hall for emphasis- and the blade only barely missed the top of the spider-theif's head in the process. "You could really hurt somebody with this thing!"

PostSubject: Re: Discovery   Discovery EmptyMon 9 Jan - 22:20

Barely listening to Alexander as he prattled on about Eivin, Cedar trudged on through the halls, paying him no mind. The first year was already beginning to make a nuisance of himself before they had even passed through the front doors, and though Cedar had a fairly long fuse, the kid was likely to tick someone else off before the day was out if he kept carrying on. Of course, Cedar knew he could spare the sapling some trouble with just a few words of caution, but he was rather fond of the lessons learned the hard way. Besides, a few good lumps never hurt anyone, he thought, mentally backpedalling immediately. No, wait- they did hurt, but that was the point.

“Wha-…SATIN SPIDER!?”

Satin spider? Hadn’t the kid just been rambling on about apes?

“Uhm… Cedar… help?”

By the time Cedar turned, however, another kid was at the scene carrying on in a way that forced him to watch, brows raised, barely even moving when the machete was pulled from his grasp. The curly-haired kid appeared to have a pretty decent handle on the weapon, anyway, dismembering Alexander’s shirt with impressive precision. Impressive or not, however, the show was growing old awfully quick, and though Cedar stood relaxed while Curly lectured him, he wasted no time in retrieving the machete the moment he stopped moving.

“You’re right,” He said through a disinterested sigh, holding the machete by the blade as he slipped it out of Lampard’s hand. A few long seconds passed with the weapon balanced awkwardly in Cedar’s hand and for a second it seemed as if he was simply going to tuck it back under his arm and walk off until, in a single fluid motion, he flipped the handle into his palm, twirled it once to his right, and brought the flat side up to Lampard’s chin, a devilishly playful smirk on his face.

“I could.”

Lingering just long enough to raise suspicion about whether or not his unspoken threat was genuine, Cedar tucked the machete back under his arm, losing the edge to his expression as he did so.

“Seriously, though,” He started, looking from the Lampard to the Silk Spider and back. “I’m not sure why you have one of those as a pet, but keep it away from me, alright Curly?” It wasn’t a request.

PostSubject: Re: Discovery   Discovery EmptyTue 10 Jan - 0:10

Cicely seemed stunned at first as Eivin snatched the bag out of her hand. It's like some sort of mental process was still running in her mind, struggling to figure out what had just happened. Lacking in any sort of social experience, the girl eventually was forced to turn to the statistics lest her mind short circuit.

"You're a bully." such a statement held...influence when said aloud. True many people thought it much, and Eivin himself probably knew what people thought of him. However, it was a rare thing indeed for one to so bluntly state the fact aloud. Most people would never even assume there was any point in stating it. However, one had to admit it was an...awkward thing to respond to.

And the girl wasn't finished there either, "I don't mind sharing my lunch with you. It's a courteous thing to do for a person who may not have one to enjoy. But you should seriously consider reflecting on your current path of actions. Statistics show that bullying is often the result of tension, abuse, or lack of bonding with the parental figures. Although the mental and even physical trauma bullies sometimes inflict upon others, it's actually often minute to the pain the bully themselves undergo. An inability to notice and admit this fact, and as such seek methods of fixing it, can cause long term ramifications to the bully. Often they end up following the actions of their own parental figure to their own offspring. So in theory, a single bully can potentially inflict several of their own generations with strife and poor guidance. If you ever feel you need someone to talk to, I will be here. It's only courteous to try and help those in need, especially those who do not yet realize they are in need of it."

The girl didn't seem even slightly unnerved or awkward from ticking off these diagnostics. In fact she looked expectantly downwards at Eivin, expecting some kind of response. There was no fear in her, or sympathy for that matter. She seemed to be talking about help as if it was a common expectation.

-------------

"You children certainly seem to get bolder every year."

There was something about the adult voice. When it grew accustomed to respect it seemed to haunt the average youth. If spoken whilst an action either discouraged, or restricted was being performed, a mysterious chill seemed capable of creeping down ones back. It was this feeling that caused Alexander to shiver, and it wasn't due to his now partial nudity at having his shirt cut down the middle.

"However, even though I understand that boys will be boys, each year we must learn to exchange a portion of our ambition with caution and maturity. Judging by your current positions, though, you'll have to earn three years of maturity for each year of ambition to rectify the ratio."

Mr. Feldgreen meticulously polished his monocle, a bemused expression somehow mixing with a hint of disappointment. The golden chain of the monocle seemed to almost purposely attract one's eye, causing it to follow the lead. It wound down his vest and into the right side pocket, where the head of a bronze colored blackjack could be seen. This didn't bode well to Alexander.

Cedar knew better...to some degree. Although Mr. Feldgreen was a master at appearances, there'd been practically no known incidents of him striking a student in punishment. No one knew if the blackjack was a small souvenir he used on invading sivans attacking his garden, or if he purposely kept the thing to unnerve disobedient students. Either way, even with the knowledge that a run in with the man likely wouldn't involve physical pain, Bradbury Feldgreen had quickly proven a competent disciplinary aid in the previous year. Now as the head man in that department, he'd been making big talk about getting headway with the 'delinquents' plaguing Sapling.

Katen, though large, was relatively isolated from the rest of the world. With the mountains to it's east, and the forests protecting it from all other angles. Those in Katen were usually expected to either become productive citizens, or become minions for the miners to use in the more dangerous shafts. Feldgreen didn't intend to let these minions come from Sapling if he had any say in the matter.

"Cedar, I expect that...thing to be on my office desk before the first lessons begin today. As for you two..." Alexander felt himself stiffening to attention as the man's eyes turned towards him, "Pets are only allowed on this campus if you can verify they are yours, they carry no dangerous disease, and if you can show they can be controlled without distracting you from your studies. It's unusual to see a satin spider in these halls, and even though it be small you'll have to do a better job of demonstrating to me that it will not be a distraction...or a menace. And you young man, I expect to see you in 'full' uniform by the next time we meet. With will of course be after your lessons. I'll want to see all three of you in my office before you leave today. Do we understand each other?"

"W-what? B-but it wasn't my fault! I-" the man smoothly plugged the monocle in his left eye, glaring down at Alex with an expression that seemed to convey his words exactly, "I'll just...tell you later today."

"Excellent. It's better to rectify a situation immediately, and learn how to avoid the situation altogether after the crisis. And you two?"

PostSubject: Re: Discovery   Discovery EmptyTue 10 Jan - 21:28

There were very many things that could be said about Lampard's ditzy attitude, but Tyrin would cede that it had one decisive advantage... Whether it was through an ignorance of the situation, or a sort of innocence that could not comprehend the idea of actual harm from the world around him, Lampard could widely be considered to be a boy who knew no fear. The concept simply didn't register with him. In the real world, perhaps in a place fraught with many a terrible peril, this too might at times be a burden, but here, in the jungled maze of everyday school-life... It had the potential to make him a King among men.

...Or get him beheaded, or thrown into detention on his first day of class. When Cedar held the machete towards Lampards throat, the boy simply blinked at it, as if not sure entirely why it was there, and even though, from across the room, Tyrin had winced immediately, Lampard himself didn't seem fazed in the slightest. Instead, when Cedar called him Curly, Lampard simply smiled a silly little grin.

"Oh no, my name's not Curly. It's Lampard. Curly's the guy at the pancake shop. But I think that's just a nickname." Lampard put it all out matter-a-factly, as if he really thought Cedar was mistaking him for someone else. He probably did think it. And, Tyrin noticed, he had not responded at all to the threat about keeping the spider away. Nevertheless, even if Lampard wasn't intimidated, Tyrin wasn't about to let him gullibly walk headfirst into more trouble, and he started walking, almost walking into Mr.Feldgreen's back when the teacher beat him to the punch.

Even as Alex... oh joy, back for a Second go-round at the old Seed level, was he? But even as the second/first year trembled, Lampard didn't seem to know what to think of the teacher, even though he nodded his head obediantly at every word the older man said. When Mr.Feldgreen finished however, Lampard, finally seeming to sense trouble, looked from side to side like a pickpocket who had just been caught in the act, and looked up at the teacher nievely.

"Ummmm... It wasn't a spider," Lampard began, and even his voice gave away that he was making the story up as he went along. Oh, this was going to be good. The boy produced a lump of something and held it out instead for inspection. "It was yarn." came the eventual lame conclusion. Tyrin noticed with some surprise that the spider had in fact vanished completely from the scene, and the yarn was roughly the same size... But yarn didn't leap into people's shirts, and the idea of a Seed throwing scratchy yarn at someone intentionally was probably much worse than the penalty for sneaking a pet by anyway. "I think the machete might've been yarn too."

~...Except that you just ADMITTED IT WAS A MACHETE.~ Tyrin stepped in smoothly before things could get any worse.

"He'll be there, Mr.Feldgreen." Tyrin was himself, completely calm at this stage. He was, actually, a Hall Moniter of sorts himself, and though it gave him no truly special privledge past roaming the wings, it did mean that after his first incredibly mediocre and uneventful year as a student, that the faculty had seen him sufficiently moral to uphold the school's mandates. Even if Lampard was dug into a hole, Tyrin, it would easily be believed, would keep the boy in line.

...Beside that was the fact that the Priffinberry's and their company were responsible for most of the excellent rates the school received on student uniforms. So, as much as Lampard would never even consider using that as leverage personally, it wouldn't be good for any party if the boy went crying home on the first day about how mean the facility was. Bad for school PR.

PostSubject: Re: Discovery   Discovery EmptyWed 11 Jan - 22:19

Eivin watched Cicely, sure that she would turn around and shuffle up to the front of the room without a word as he’d told her to. Seedlings really had no resistance. They were small and squeaky and unsure of themselves. Awkward. Especially on the first day. As soon as she processed his order, she would bend and break like stick over a knee. And she would leave.

When it was clear that Cicely had sufficiently processed his words, however, she did not turn around. Instead, she took in a great, steadying breath. And he knew that she was preparing herself to speak. It was delayed, though. She obviously didn’t do this often. At least… not with people like him. “You are a bully.” The words tumbled, off balance, from her mouth, though with a strength of conviction that Eivin didn’t know how to respond to. He simply stared at her for a moment, his expression never changing, until she stumbled on, picking up speed like a steamboat chugging downriver.

“I don’t mind sharing my lunch with you. It’s a courteous thing to do for a person who may not have one to enjoy.”

The classroom and activity within it seemed to slow, and everything began to fade. Though he’d exchanged words with her, though he’d taken her lunch, and though she’d called him out as a bully, he hadn’t exactly noticed her before. Not in any meaningful, lasting way, at least. But with that simple kindness, she had forced herself into her line of attention and planted herself firmly in mind where he would not forget her. He would be thinking about her throughout class and after he left… because the memory of her words would linger.

A frown drew down on his lips as she continued, her voice robotic, mechanical. If he’d interrupted, he doubted she would stop. But it was undeniable, the spark of anger as she condescended to assess him. As if he’d asked her to. And the patronizing, self-righteous… help offer? He didn’t need her help. “It's only courteous to try and help those in need, especially those who do not yet realize they are in need of it."

And then she stopped. She stared. She expected.

And he was silent. He glared. For lack of words.

Clearing his head, Eivin scowled and shoved the lunch bag back into the girl’s hands. “Go back to the front row,” he growled again, before folding his arms on the desk, turning away from her, and putting his head down to resume his interrupted attempt at sleep.

((Happy birthday, Mike.))

Feldgreen.

Great.

Groaning inwardly without letting it show on his face, Cedar cursed whatever ruling force had decided to torture him for their amusement. Luck was generally never on his side anyway, but it seemed the gods’ tradition of making his first day of classes as rocky as possible was still alive and well. Still, things could be worse. Feldgreen, as much of a straight nosed authority figure as he was, wasn’t the worst by far, and if Cedar’s memory served him right, the man had a soft spot for being complimented about his pristine- and very classy- appearance.

“It’s as good as on your desk already, Mr.Feldgreen.” Cedar said, speaking with a fluid mixture between respectful formality and innocence as his posture straightened. He even added a slight inclination of his head for effect while beside him Curly- or Lampard, as he’d insisted- rambled on until the other young man spoke up in his stead. As far as Cedar was concerned, the two were a weird pair, but he didn’t so much as give them a sideways glance and lose his posture while he still had a chance to smooth the situation out just a bit further.

“I apologize for the ruckus, I’ll be sure to- is that a new monocle? I could’ve sworn the one you wore last year was slightly more bronzed; an original Waingam, if I remember correctly.” Cedar chimed, leaning in ever so slightly to get a better look at the professor’s optical accessory. His interest seemed utterly genuine, too, and despite his words, he was more than confident that his memory was crystal clear. Of the many things Cedar was good at, noticing small details was a particularly sharp skill of his; often to his benefit as the situation was proving. That, and his father was a fan of monocles as well.

“This, though…” He continued, examining the piece from a comfortable distance. “An Eliquois original, right? Gilded, too. Craftsmanship like that is rarely worn so well.”

Allowing the silence to linger for just the right amount of time to ensure that his act was as solid as a rock, Cedar finally shook his head and withdrew himself with a slightly embarrassed chuckle.

“Ah, sorry about that.” He digressed, bowing his head. “It’s just hard for me not to appreciate style like that.”

Right, ‘style’. Cedar didn’t think he’d ever be caught dead wearing a monocle, but if his acting skills had anything to say about it, Feldgreen would think otherwise.

((Mike, why are you arguing with Lady Sheena? All she wants is an argument and a chance to sound so much smarter than everyone else. Don't give her the satisfaction.))

I don't really care. We're having a debate, it's not an uncommon thing to see. I have no plans of shutting my mouth every time she says a word. The amount of things she's capable of doing to me are literally zero. I'm not sacrificing anything by talking. I at least am going to approach debate as an adult, and not treat every response as some kind of taunt of argument. I appreciate the concern but you needn't worry.

Lol, besides it's over now. No harm done.
